The Changing History of Chinese School Uniform

Clothing is a symbol. It carries a lot of people’s memory, and also records the change of the times. Everyone who has experienced or is experiencing student life, the long campus life always cannot leave that highly consistent uniform clothing – Chinese school uniform.

As long as we are talking about school’s collective activities, school uniform is imperative. It has become a dress code, an identity: the flag-raising ceremony on Monday morning, the sports meeting every academic year, and various parties and activities. Even our graduation photos were robbed by the Chinese school uniform, and we could only find our own faces in the orderly crowd from low to high.

Looking at the same clothes, Looking at our own once childish, or rebellious, or strange faces. Looking back at history, the styles of school uniforms have changed over time. School uniforms in different historical periods always represent the distinctive characteristics of this era. For example, in the founding of new China, during the establishment of the people’s Republic of China, the styles of school uniforms have changed with time. In the 1960s and 1970s, the national green military uniform, the navy uniform in the 1980s, the noodle pocket in the 1990s, the popular western school uniform in the new century, and all kinds of “hand-painted school uniform” which publicize personality, can be said that the development of school uniform has gone through a tedious and confusing road.

1. Uniform School Uniform First Appeared

Although the revolution of 1911 failed to rescue China from the semi-feudal and semi-colonial society, it broke the old clothing restriction of “five grades of people and five colors of clothes” for thousands of years. The spring tide of the new culture movement awakened people’s desire for beauty. The younger generation showed unprecedented innocence, ease and joy.

2. The 1930s: Cheongsam was Popular

Chinese cheongsam was popular on campus, and girls in famous schools were fashionable at that time. The new cheongsam, which was made by the fusion and improvement of Manchu and Han clothing, became popular as early as the 1920s. At this time, it also entered the campus and became the new public favorite, especially of girls.

3. 1940s: the School Uniform Continues the Clothing Style of the 1930s

Speaking of this, it seems that they are talking about girls and ignoring boys? Now take a look at the men’s school uniform. At that time, college students often wore long cloth robes on their upper bodies, western-style trousers, and cloth shoes. By the middle and late period of the Republic of China, such a kind of dress has become a symbol of intellectuals.

4. Students in Indwelling Robes

It seems that there are not many Zhongshan suits advocated by Dr. Sun Yat Sen on campus; It’s strange. Maybe it is the national complex of Chinese literati.

5. In the 1950s:

During this era, there is no specific school uniform. people’s aesthetic taste is relatively quiet and moderate. Consequently, so the white top, dark bottom has become the mainstream. At that time, the country was full of waste and had more important things to do than to formulate a uniform school uniform, so there was no fixed style of school uniform. In the era of white clothes and black trousers, the so-called school uniform can not be immune from vulgarity. Of course, Whitecoat and blue trousers, white coats and blue skirts, have become classics. Even today, such color matching is not out of date.

The history of the change of Chinese school uniform will be introduced here today. We will introduce modern Chinese school uniforms in the next session. What are their characteristics? See you next time!
