How to Learn the Mandarin

When many foreign friends learn Putonghua, their foreign accent is always visible in their pronunciation. Netizens have said that listening to such a “foreign accent and foreign accent” is really worrying. If you really want to master the Mandarin, your pronunciation must reach the standard level. However, it gives rise to another pressing question: is there any good way to help foreign Chinese learners overcome the “foreign accent”?

1. Carefully Feel the Pronunciation

There is a place in language learning that we call the “hardest hit area.” This is where tone and pronunciation errors occur. There are 20 groups of tone combination patterns of Chinese disyllabic words. When students encounter new words, they only need to imitate them with familiar words that belong to the same tone pattern. For example,  if they see the word “robust”, they can imitate the tone of “attending class”. It is imperative to remember 20 simple disyllabic words belonging to 20 tone patterns.  Carefully understanding the feeling and rhythm of pronunciation can help you a long way in mastering tone. This way, you can draw inferences from one another.

Another central problem that Chinese foreign learners encounter has something to do with the initials and finals of Chinese words. a, To overcome this, Chinese teachers should teach students to feel the pronunciation carefully. They must also teach learners methods to apply this in their daily learning regimen. One Korean Chinese teacher at Hanseo University teaches Korean students without prior Chinese background; not to mention exposure. Initially, she deconstructs the pronunciation pattern of the Korean language. Then she transposes this in her teaching to help her students understand better. By understanding the characteristics of Korean pronunciation, she can understand the point of view of her students. This way, she can easily start teaching Chinese Pinyin. Point out where students are prone to make mistakes in pronunciation and intonation, and demonstrate the correct parts and methods of pronunciation. Through this, students can practice repeatedly.

2. Listening and Practicing More the Mandarin

Although phonetic errors are common among foreign Chinese learners, many people can eloquently speak standard Chinese. How did they do it?

Recalling the experience of learning Chinese for the first time five years ago, Kevin, a Bangladeshi international student, said, “At that time, every time I learned a tone, I had to spend a day or two practicing it. When I learned it, I found basic words like ‘coffee’ to practice. I read every tone slowly. This way, I can feel the rhythm of the tone and remember it. An old student in Romania also stressed the importance of listening. She said, “Listening is the basis of all languages. Listening teaches you to deconstruct a conversation and learn from it. If you don’t listen carefully to how Chinese people speak Chinese, how can you speak like Chinese people?”

3. Speaking the Mandarin is also Crucial

Besides paying attention to “listening”, we should also pay more attention to “speaking”. Anna, a brave and enthusiastic French girl, is willing to take the initiative to chat with people wherever she goes. She said, “Every time I meet a Chinese, I will actively communicate in Chinese and try my best to pronounce the pronunciation accurately, even if it is a little exaggerated, I don’t care.”

Some professional Chinese Teachers think that some Putonghua training methods are incredibly effective. It helps foreign students practice Chinese pronunciation where they can fossilize it in their system. It becomes second nature. Consequently, they use it for reference in overseas Chinese teaching. “Reading, speaking, and listening drills are catchy. especially some tongue twisters, nursery rhymes, ancient and modern poems, etc.,. Listening and reading repeatedly is of great help to correct the tone of foreign students. ” “As the old Kung fu saying goes, “Iron pestle grinds into a needle.”, The “three-way” method of language learning: “listen more, speak more and practice more” is the secret for foreigners to master correct pronunciation and intonation.

Of course, it is really too difficult for foreign Chinese learners to reach the level of a native Chinese announcer. However, it is still possible to approach the correct pronunciation and reduce foreign accents in pronunciation. The last tip is, to pick up confidence, practice hard and find targeted training methods. Through these, you can speak standard Chinese.
