Here are some different ways to express “yes” in Chinese.

Shì (de)

  1. 1. 是(的)。

Yes.

If there is one verb “是 (shì)” in a question, you can give a positive answer with “是 (shì)” or “是的 (shì de)”.

Zhè shì nǐ de yào shi ma?

这是你的钥匙吗?

Is this your keys?

Shì de.

是的。

Yes.

Key verbs

In Chinese simple questions, you can use key verbs to answer the questions. Such as verbs of thought or feeling, modal verbs, etc.

Nǐ chī miàn tiáo ma?

Chī.

Yes.

Nǐ huì chàng gē ma?

你会唱歌吗?

Can you sing a song?

Huì.

会。

Yes, I can.

kě yǐ /dāng rán /méi wèn tí

  • 3. 可以/当然/没问题

Yes/ of course/ no problem

If one asks you for your help or permission, you can answer with positive verbs such as “可以 (kě yǐ)”, “当然 (dāng rán)” and “没问题 (méi wèn tí)”.

Wǒ kě yǐ qù kàn diàn yǐng ma?

我可以去看电影吗?

Can I go to the movie?

Kě yǐ.

可以。

Yes, you can.

Hǎo.  

  • 4. 好。

Ok.

“好 (hǎo)” is a positive answer, which can be followed with some modal particles, such as “好啊 (hǎo ā)”, “好的 (hǎo de)” and “好吧 (hǎo ba)”。

Xíng.        

  1. 5. 行。

OK.

“行 (Xíng)” is also a positive answer in spoken Chinese.

  • 6. 对/没错
