The central measurement of proficiency for Chinese students studying abroad is the TOEFL and IELTS. On the other hand, foreign students who want to study in China have to pass the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). People refer to the HSK as the “Chinese IELTS”. According to the standards of Hanban, HSK (Level 4) tests candidates’ Chinese proficiency, which corresponds to Level 4 of the International Chinese Proficiency Standard and Level B2 of the Common Reference Framework for European Languages (CEF). Candidates who have passed HSK (Level 4) can talk about a wide range of topics in Chinese and communicate fluently with native Chinese speakers.
