How do You Say “Sorry” in Chinese?

Here are different ways to express “sorry” in Chinese.

1.

Duì bù qǐ.

对不起。

Sorry.

This is the most standard and proper way.

2.

Bào qiàn. 

抱歉

Sorry.

This is another common way to say “sorry”. “抱歉 (bào qiàn)” is a little bit lighter than “对不起 (duì bù qǐ)”

3.

Bù hǎo yì sī. 

不好意思。

It literally means “to be embarrassed”.

We always use it when things are not as severe, it is a courtesy phrase. And also, if you have to interrupt or bother someone, you can use “不好意思 (bù hǎo yì sī)”.

4.

Bié shēng qì. 

别生气。

Don’t be mad.

When you make a mistake and try to come to the other person down, you can say “别生气 (bié shēng qì)”.
